On May 25 of each year, African countries celebrate “Africa Day”, a celebration that marks African Freedom Day on the anniversary of the founding of the Organization of African Unity, now known as the African Union.
The story of the celebration of Africa Day began during the First Conference of Independent African States in Accra, Ghana on April 15, 1958.
The conference presented the progress made by liberation movements on the African continent, which symbolize the determination of the African people to break free from domination and called for the establishment of an African Freedom Day.
May 25 was chosen to celebrate Africa Day because it marks the anniversary of the founding of the Organization of African Unity on May 25, 1963, when 32 independent countries signed the Constitutive Charter in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and in 2002, the OAU became known as the African Union.
This year’s celebration of Africa Day coincides with the growth of national liberation movements, the decline of traditional colonialism, and the shift of many African countries to build partnerships with countries far from traditional colonialism to support their independence, including Russia and China.
North Africa News will later publish an extensive article explaining the dimensions of this day and the impact of national liberation movements to get rid of Western colonialism in its various forms, traditional, economic and political.
