The Pentagon announced that the withdrawal of US forces from Chad is a temporary measure, as part of a comprehensive review of security cooperation between the United States and Chad.

The Pentagon spokesman explained in statements to reporters that last May, a small team of American military personnel was transferred out of Chad, and he indicated that some members of this team were already preparing to leave, stressing that the team continues to carry out its tasks from multiple locations outside the country.

The spokesman added that this withdrawal represents part of the ongoing evaluation of security cooperation relations with Chad, stressing the readiness of the United States to resume joint work with the Chadian government.

The United States had begun withdrawing the vast majority of its forces, which included about 100 soldiers, in response to the request of the Chadian authorities.

It is noteworthy that both the United States and Chad announced different reasons for the withdrawal of American forces. As for Washington, the Pentagon explained that the withdrawal was temporary and was postponed to be reconsidered after the Chadian presidential elections that were held on May 6, 2024.

Reports also emerged of a request from the Chief of Staff of the Chadian Air Force to withdraw US forces, indicating that there is no agreement allowing their presence.

As for Chad, it expressed its desire to reduce dependence on foreign forces and strengthen its national sovereignty and seeks to reduce the cost of hosting American forces.

Regional trends towards cooperation with Russia and China also influenced the emergence of Chad’s decision to seek to redirect its security relations.
