Pyotr Ilyichev, director of the Department of International Organizations at the Russian Foreign Ministry, said that some Western countries are trying to turn Libya into a new arena for confrontation with Russia.

The Russian diplomat stressed in an interview with Russian media that Libya has so far “not yet recovered from the blatant aggression launched by NATO against it, which began in 2011 by circumventing UN Security Council resolutions.”

Libya is practically divided into two, teetering on the brink of civil war, and in fact becoming a source of illegal immigration.

“Against the backdrop of the Ukraine crisis, individual countries and in a broad anti-Russian campaign are trying to turn Libya into a battleground with our country. “But these attempts only serve to entrench existing lines of division on the ground and delay the prospects for a settlement among Libyans.”

The diplomat noted that the situation “on the ground” in Libya can only be improved through dialogue between all Libyan warring parties, with the help of external players interested in the central role of the UN.

“We proceed from the premise that expressing the will of the people can put an end to Libya’s long-standing dual power and become the basis for stability by restoring the country’s unity and territorial integrity. “Libyans in particular should determine the timing and arrangements for holding elections, without external pressure or artificially imposed deadlines.”

It is noteworthy that the Egyptian capital Cairo hosted on Saturday (December 16th), a tripartite meeting that included the speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives Aguila Saleh, the head of the Presidential Council Mohamed al-Menfi and the commander of the Libyan army Khalifa Haftar, in the presence of the head of the Egyptian intelligence service, Major General Abbas Kamel, to discuss the round of dialogue called for by the United Nations Mission in Libya.

In a joint statement, the participants affirmed their welcome to the round of dialogue, provided that the reservations and demands of the two meetings were considered and taken into account, without mentioning these reservations. The meeting called on the United Nations mission to find common ground to ensure the success of the dialogue.

We affirm the importance of the efforts led by the United Nations mission, and the importance of supporting a balanced Libyan-Libyan solution in order to achieve the aspirations and hopes of the Libyan people to hold simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections.
