Chad is witnessing an unprecedented situation on the border with Sudan, as a result of security incidents among Sudanese refugees, due to the presence of the same conflicting tribes in both countries.

Former Chadian Interior Minister Ibrahim al-Aseel said on the security situation in the refugee areas: “The tribes in Chad and Sudan are intertwined, as there are the same tribes in the two countries, which has been reflected in the situation in the border areas to a limited extent.”

“One of the most affected tribes in Sudan is the Masalit tribe, which has been disputed with the Arab tribes in Sudan, which has led to individual incidents between the same tribe in Chad and Arab tribes in the border areas where refugees are located,” al-Aseel said.

Al-Aseel pointed out that the continuation of the situation could lead to dangerous developments, if work is not done to calm the crisis, especially since the strongest role in Africa is usually for tribes and civil administration.

Al-Aseel stressed the need to involve the native administration for peaceful coexistence between existing and expatriate tribes and to limit any negative developments, warning that cells of terrorist groups in the Sahel region could benefit from the current security tensions in some countries.

Extremist groups in Sudan and Chad pose little threat in border areas, while they are active in Mali, Niger, and some neighbouring countries, he said.
