The Confederation of African Football (CAF) denied reports regarding the postponement of the next edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to be held next year in 2025 in Morocco.
CAF said through its account on the “X” platform: “The reports received regarding the 2025 tournament are incorrect,” explaining that its executive committee will meet soon to consult on the tournament and decide on the dates of the 2025 African Cup of Nations, and the federation will issue a statement after that on the matter.
The tournament is scheduled to start in Morocco in June 2025, but this conflicts with the expanded Club World Cup, which includes 32 teams and will be held in the United States from June 15 to July 13.
Africa will have 4 clubs in the Club World Cup, namely Al-Ahly of Egypt, Wydad Casablanca of Morocco, Esperance of Tunisia, and Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa.
It is also expected that a large number of African players will participate with their European and Asian clubs in the Club World Cup.
The French newspaper “L’Equipe” reported on its website that “upon inquiry from the African Confederation about how to coordinate between the two tournaments, the Secretary-General of the Confederation, Veron Osingo Omba, indicated the postponement of the continental championship.”
Omba said: “We can hold the tournament after the Club World Cup, but is this good for the benefit of the players who played the entire season, then travel to America to play, and then immediately return to play in the African Cup of Nations?” The match schedule is a nightmare for everyone.”
The French newspaper pointed out that “postponing the tournament is not in the interest of Morocco, which intended to benefit from the Cup of Nations to boost the tourism industry, but postponement will prevent everyone from playing in high temperatures during the summer.”
Reports on AFCON 2025 are untrue.
The CAF Executive Committee will meet, deliberate and make a decision on the AFCON 2025 dates.
CAF will thereafter issue official statement on the matter.#CAF #CAFonline pic.twitter.com/Z0XXoIyvLi— CAF Media (@CAF_Media) June 5, 2024
