Algeria’s representative to the United Nations, Ammar Ben Jama, said that Algeria will submit a draft resolution to the UN Security Council aimed at “stopping the killing in Rafah.”
Ben Jamea told reporters after a closed meeting of Council members: “This Wednesday afternoon, Algeria will circulate a draft resolution regarding Rafah,” explaining that the resolution “will be a short and decisive text to stop the killing in Rafah.”
The draft resolution was based on a ruling issued by the International Court of Justice last week, which states that “Israel, the occupying power, must immediately stop its military attack and any other actions in Rafah.”
The project called for “an immediate ceasefire respected by all parties, and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.”
The Algerian ambassador did not specify the exact date for voting on the draft resolution, but Chinese Ambassador Fu Cong expressed his hope that the vote would take place as soon as possible, saying: “We hope that this will take place as soon as possible because there are lives at stake.”
French Ambassador Nicolas de Rivière supported the need for rapid action, stressing that “the time has come for this council to move and adopt a new resolution, as this is a matter of life or death.”
In response to a question about the Algerian draft text, US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said that she was waiting to see it and that the response would be “later.”
