The Washington Post published an analysis of a possible Israeli military operation against Rafah, warning that it would lead to a wave of refugees for more than a million Palestinians towards Egyptian territory.

The report notes that any major escalation by Israel in Rafah results in a mass flight of Gazans, who have gathered in this border area after losing their homes due to previous Israeli military operations.

The deteriorating situation has raised questions about Egypt’s readiness to receive Palestinian refugees, in light of internal security concerns and regional reservations regarding the possibility of Palestinians returning to their homes, which brings to mind the fate of Palestinian refugees in previous generations.

Experts are skeptical about whether Hamas can be defeated, and international diplomats and humanitarian workers are concerned about the harm to civilians.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi expressed fears that the ground offensive on Rafah would have devastating effects on the humanitarian situation in Gaza, threatening peace, and security in the wider region.

A letter signed by the heads of more than 50 international humanitarian organizations warned President Biden that the assault on Rafah would lead to the collapse of Gaza’s aid network, making it impossible to implement an effective humanitarian plan to prevent famine affecting hundreds of thousands.

The report illustrates the grim situation in Gaza and notes that if displaced people do not go to Egypt, they will be forced to seek refuge in other areas of Gaza that have been devastated by Israel.
