The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has condemned mass abductions by militants in northwestern Nigeria.

The UN chief called on the Nigerian authorities to break the cycle of impunity through “prompt, thorough and impartial investigations”.

In a statement, Türk expressed horror at the repeated mass abductions of men, women, and children in northern Nigeria, stressing that the abduction of Nigerians is atrocities that should not become the norm in life.

The commissioner stressed the need to identify the kidnappers and hold them accountable, noting that this is “the first step to combating the impunity that fuels attacks and abductions”.

He spoke about the efforts of the Nigerian authorities to rescue the students, calling on the Abuja authorities to ensure that abductions are promptly investigated and those responsible brought to justice.

According to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, at least 564 people have been abducted since March 7, most of them children.

Armed groups in Nigeria use the kidnapping of students as a ransom vehicle to finance their military operations in the region.
