Karachay-Circassia in southern Russia witnessed an armed attack on a traffic police post that killed two policemen and injured four others.

According to a statement from the Russian Interior Ministry, five attackers carried out the attack, which took place in the village of Mara Ayagi at 23:20 local time on Sunday.

The attackers reportedly arrived at the scene of the attack in a car, where they threw an explosive device at the police and opened fire using automatic weapons.

Police repelled the attack and exchanged fire with the attackers, killing five of them at the scene of the attack.

The statement issued by the Russian Interior Ministry confirmed that the authorities found in the possession of the attackers several improvised explosive devices.

The statement also explained that the dead victims of the security men were from the Russian province of Kurgan, while among the injured were local police and a member of the National Guard of the Republic of Karachay-Cherkessia, in addition to an employee of the Russian Interior from the Kurgan province.
