Inflation in Tunisia declined in April to 7.2%, while the consumer price index increased by 0.9%, driven by the increase in food prices by 0.5%, and the prices of clothing and footwear group by 6.3%.
The Tunisian National Institute of Statistics revealed in a statement today that the decline in the inflation rate during April compared to the previous March rate of 7.5%, is due to the contraction in the rate of increase in prices between April and March 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.
In a context related to consumption on a monthly basis, the institute indicated that the increase in the consumer price index during the month of April compared to March 2024, follows an increase of 0.7% recorded by the index during last March.
Food prices increased by 9.2%, mainly driven by an increase in coffee prices by 35%, lamb by 25.5%, edible oils by 21.4%, spices by 17.4%, beef by 14.3% and fresh fish by 12.1%.
The price index of the food and beverages group increased by 0.5% during April, driven by the increase in poultry prices by 5.7%, lamb by 4.6%, fresh fish by 2.9%, and beef prices by 2.2%, while vegetables prices declined by 4.5% and fresh grain prices by 2.8%.
The prices of clothes and shoes increased by 6.3% as a result of the end of the seasonal winter sale, which coincided with the celebration of Eid Al-Fitr, where the prices of clothes increased by 6.3%, the prices of shoes by 7.3%, and the prices of clothing accessories by 2.7%.
