The International Organization for Migration announced the loss of 45 migrants and fears of their death after their boat sank in the Mediterranean Sea while trying to reach Europe from Tunisia.

In a separate incident, the Italian coastguard announced the discovery of the bodies of nine people and the rescue of 22 others, noting that another 15 people may be missing.

The survivors were taken to the nearby Italian island of Lampedusa, the first port where many migrants seeking to reach the European Union stop.

The International Organization for Migration reported on the social media platform “X” on Friday that its staff on the island of Lampedusa had received information from survivors that another boat had left Tunisia and sank as well, and that all 45 passengers were missing.
