The governorate of Kairouan, in the center-west of the country, witnessed a heinous murder that claimed the life of a woman, a mother of two children.
The prosecution office at the Kairouan Court of First Instance stated that the victim’s husband, who was 30 years old, was arrested on charges of brutally killing her using a knife at dawn on Monday.
She explained that a dispute broke out between the spouses, forcing the wife to flee into the street, where the husband chased her with a knife and knocked her to the ground before stabbing her several times and ending her life.
Official statistics indicate that about 70 murders of women were recorded within the family during the past five years, including 25 crimes during the past year.
According to the Tunisian Ministry of Women’s 2023 survey, no less than 4% of women have been exposed to domestic violence during their lives.
According to reports by human rights organizations, three-quarters of citizens in Tunisia see gender-based violence as a top priority, but at the same time they consider it a private issue.
