The head of a prestigious Tunisian organisation has revealed dramatic statistics revealing a huge amount of food waste in the country during the holy month of Ramadan.
According to the head of the organization, Tunisians throw 66% of food and 46% of bread in the trash during this holy month.
Lotfi Riahi, head of the Consumer Guidance Organization, called for immediate action to address this worrying situation.
Al-Riahi stressed the need to start the process of storing food regularly and in a proper manner, stressing the importance of abandoning white flour in the manufacture of bread due to the health damage it may cause.
Al-Riahi pointed to his organization’s efforts in organizing awareness campaigns to resist food waste within commercial spaces, but they were rejected, stressing the need to continue efforts to educate the public and change harmful consumption behaviors.
This comes amid high food prices and scarcity of some food, which increases pressure on Tunisian families during this holy month, and the country is also facing a deteriorating economic situation, making the situation more complicated.
In a related context, President Kais Saied accused unspecified “lobbies” of trying to starve Tunisians by exercising monopoly and controlling distribution routes and promised to hold accountable those responsible for these acts.
These statements come at a time when achieving radical changes in tackling food waste and ensuring its fair and equitable provision to all segments of society is required.
The government and partner organizations need to take effective action to address these challenges and ensure the sustainability of citizens’ food supplies.
