On Friday, December 29, the UN Security Council will hold a meeting on Gaza, under the item entitled “The situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question”.

The UAE called for the meeting because of the rapidly escalating situation in the West Bank and its impact on the two-state solution.

The UAE mission to the Security Council said on its X account, “Extremist settler violence and reports of Israeli raids seriously jeopardize the political horizon between Palestine and Israel.”

On December 22, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution calling on Israel and Hamas to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid throughout the Gaza Strip, and also calling on the UN secretary-general to appoint a coordinator for the delivery of such aid.

The UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2722 on the expansion and monitoring of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip with the approval of 13 council members, while the United States and Russia abstained.

According to the Security Council resolution, “(the Council) calls for urgent steps to ensure safe, unhindered and wide-scale humanitarian access, as well as to create conditions for a sustainable cessation of hostilities.”

The resolution states that the UN Security Council requests the UN secretary-general to appoint a “senior humanitarian and reconstruction coordinator” to accelerate the delivery of humanitarian aid to the civilian population in the Gaza Strip.

On 22 December, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2720 on Gaza and Israel, which calls for urgent steps to allow the immediate extensive, safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid and to create the necessary conditions for a sustainable cessation of hostilities.

The resolution, submitted by the United Arab Emirates, an Arab member of the Council, requests the Secretary-General of the United Nations to appoint a senior humanitarian and reconstruction coordinator who will be responsible in Gaza for facilitating, coordinating and monitoring all humanitarian relief shipments destined for Gaza from States not parties to the conflict, and verifying their humanitarian character.
