The United Nations has estimated the volume of rubble and rubble to be removed in the Gaza Strip at about 37 million tons, with intensive Israeli shelling continuing since October 7, 2023.
Pierre Ludhammar, an official with the UN Mine Action Service, said, “We have estimated that there are 37 million tons of rubble, or about 300 kilograms of rubble per square meter, in the Gaza Strip, which before the war was densely populated and urban.”
Ludhammar said during a press statement in Geneva that the removal of this rubble will take 14 years, and that unexploded ordnance mixed with rubble poses an additional challenge that greatly complicates the task.
Ludhammar spoke of a recent meeting in Amman with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and NGOs to discuss how best to deal with this rubble mixed with explosives, “in preparation for what may happen and to intervene in Gaza.”
Paul O’Brien, Executive Director of Amnesty International USA, confirmed that Israel has committed war crimes in Gaza using US munitions.
The Executive Director of Amnesty International called on the United States to stop sending weapons with which war crimes are committed.
The remarks come as the Israeli army’s devastating war on Gaza continues, which has so far killed and injured tens of thousands of Palestinians, mostly children and women.
