The National Institution for Human Rights condemned the armed clashes that took place in the Libyan city of Zuwara and denounced the indiscriminate use of force in residential neighborhoods and endangering the lives of civilians.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Foundation described the acts of violence and armed clashes as a clear disregard for the security and safety of civilians and an undermining of security and stability in the city.

The Foundation expressed its deep concern about developments in the security situation in Zuwara, noting that civilians were injured during armed clashes between forces affiliated with the outgoing Government of National Unity and armed groups affiliated with the Zuwara Military Operations Room, which took place in the center of the city.

The Foundation called on the outgoing government to take into account national and international laws relevant to ensuring the protection of civilians during armed conflicts and stressed the necessity of full compliance with the provisions of international humanitarian law and international human rights law.

The Foundation warned against committing any violations of human rights or international humanitarian law, which may amount to war crimes.

The Foundation held the parties related to the events fully legally responsible for provoking acts of violence in Zuwara and the resulting violations and damages.
