Four women died on Sunday in a stampede during a cash distribution in the northern Nigerian city of Baoshi, local police said.

Police said the women gathered in front of a businessman’s office to receive a donation of 5,000 naira (about 3.10 euros) to mark the month of Ramadan.

Mohammed Wakeel, a spokesman for the local police, explained that five women were transferred in critical condition to the city hospital after the stampede, noting that four of them died of their injuries, while the fifth is still in care.

Witnesses said people inside the crowd began to push others in a chaotic manner for money, which caused the incident.

The incident comes after two students died last Friday in a stampede on the university campus in Nasarawa state when a crowd gathered to receive food distributed by local authorities.
