Five people died on the Tunisian island of Djerba after drinking alcohol mixed with the toxic substance “Al-Qawars”.
Tunisian radio reported that the victims bought these “bottles”, which contain chemicals such as methanol, used in perfumes and some health preparations, and mixed them with an alcoholic beverage.
The incident also led to the transfer of two other people to the “Sadiq Moghaddam” hospital in Houmt Al-Souk, to receive the necessary medical treatment.
Security sources said that preliminary research indicates that the death was caused by poisoning with alcohol-mixed bottles, noting that the victims will undergo forensic examination to determine the exact causes of death.
In the same context, the official spokesman for the Court of First Instance in the state of Medenine, Saad Al-Horr, said that three other people were rescued, and a person was kept in the case on charges of selling corrupt, toxic, and unfit for consumption, and a quantity of seized materials was seized for examination and quality.
The governorate of Medenine, south of Tunisia, witnessed a similar incident earlier this year, where the consumption of homemade alcohol led to the death of 5 people and the injury of more than 43 people with poisonings of varying severity.
