Sources confirmed to Al-Sharq newspaper on Wednesday that Sudan has nominated Abdulaziz Hassan Saleh to assume the post of Khartoum’s ambassador to Iran, as the first ambassador since the two countries severed diplomatic relations in 2016.
The sources said that the Sudanese government has officially accredited Iran’s ambassador to Sudan, and the two sides agreed to reopen the embassies after completing the necessary logistical arrangements.
Sudan severed diplomatic relations with Iran in 2016 after storming Saudi Arabia’s embassy in Tehran, but last October, the two countries reached an agreement to resume diplomatic relations and develop friendly relations based on mutual respect and common interests.
This was preceded by official meetings of officials of the two countries, as the Sudanese and Iranian foreign ministers held a meeting in Azerbaijan in July 2023, on the sidelines of the meeting of the ministerial committee of the Non-Aligned Movement.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian expressed Iran’s readiness to transfer its experiences to Sudan in several fields, while Sudanese Minister Ali al-Sadiq stressed Khartoum’s will to strengthen relations with Tehran.
Regarding rumors about an Iranian request to establish a naval base on the Red Sea, Sadiq denied this and stressed that relations between the two countries return to their normal diplomatic pattern.
