The Sudanese Foreign Ministry called for stopping the supply of weapons to the “Rapid Support Forces”, stressing that the continued arming of these forces exacerbates the humanitarian crisis in the country.
This came in an official statement issued by the Sudanese Foreign Ministry, in response to international calls for urgent humanitarian relief, in light of the war that has been ongoing for more than a year between the Sudanese army and the “Rapid Support Forces”.
In a related context, the UAE Foreign Ministry had stressed in a statement on Tuesday evening the need for an urgent humanitarian response to the Sudanese crisis, stressing the importance of a ceasefire and facilitating the rapid delivery of humanitarian aid. The UAE Foreign Ministry also condemned the use of famine as a means in the ongoing conflict.
The Sudanese Foreign Ministry considered in its statements that these calls constitute a “violation of Sudan’s sovereignty”, and demanded stopping the supply of weapons to the Rapid Support Forces that are used against Sudanese civilians and obstruct the delivery of humanitarian aid, stressing that stopping military support for these forces will contribute to achieving peace and ending the humanitarian suffering in the country.
There has not yet been an official response from the UAE to the Sudanese Foreign Ministry’s statement.
It is noteworthy that relations between Khartoum and Abu Dhabi have witnessed tension in recent months, as Sudan filed an official complaint to the UN Security Council last April against the UAE, accusing it of “aggression against Sudan and destabilizing it.”
For its part, the UAE rejected these accusations, affirming its commitment to supporting peaceful solutions to the Sudanese conflict.
It is noteworthy that the war that has been raging since mid-April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the “Rapid Support” forces has resulted in the death of about 18,800 people and the displacement of about 10 million others, according to United Nations statistics.
International warnings are escalating of an imminent humanitarian disaster in Sudan, as a result of food shortages and the deteriorating security situation that has affected most of the country’s states.
