France’s former first lady, Carla Bruni, has been questioned in Paris over the illegal financing of the presidential campaign of her husband Nicolas Sarkozy from Libya.
The ongoing investigation into Bruni comes over funds allegedly provided by the late Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi to support Sarkozy’s campaign in the 2007 presidential election.
Investigations indicate that Sarkozy benefited from large sums of money transferred through the French Interior Ministry, which he headed at the time.
Bruni was questioned as a former witness and asked again about possible manipulation of witness statements, according to the Financial Prosecutor’s Office.
Bruni has not yet been considered as a defendant, but the investigation seeks to understand her possible role in the case, particularly with regard to the communication of the parties involved.
In 2021, the judiciary also announced the opening of an additional investigation to verify the main witness in the case, Ziad Taqi al-Din, and whether he was bribed to change his testimony after he initially announced that he had transported bags containing millions of euros from Libya to France.
Taqi al-Din later retracted his statements, raising further questions about the accuracy and validity of his testimony.
