Sources told Reuters that the United States and Iraq are in the process of starting talks aimed at ending the presence of the military coalition led by Washington in Iraq.
The sources said: “With this step, the United States dropped preconditions that require Iraqi armed factions backed by Iran to stop attacks on them first.”
The sources confirmed that the United States conveyed its readiness to start talks to the Iraqi government in a letter delivered by US Ambassador to Iraq Alina Romanowski to Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein on Wednesday.
The Iraqi Foreign Ministry said it had received an important letter and that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani would study it carefully.
The talks are a step in a process stalled by the war in the Gaza Strip and are expected to take several months, if not longer, but the outcome is unclear, and the withdrawal of U.S. troops is not imminent.
