Niger has protested the returns, which it described as violent against migrants, by Algeria, calling for respect for the dignity of migrants.

During a meeting with Algeria’s ambassador to Niger, Mehdi Bakhda, Deputy Secretary-General of the Niger Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Omar Ibrahim Sidi, expressed “the protests of the government and the highest Nigerien authorities”.

Sidi condemned the “massive police raids” and the “violent nature of the modus operandi used” by the Algerian authorities in these operations, and asked Algeria to respect “the dignity and physical and moral integrity of migrants and to protect their property”.

Niger and Algeria share a long common border and maintain cooperation in several areas and call on Niger to carry out operations to combat illegal immigration “while respecting the relations of brotherhood and cooperation” between the two countries.

The Algerian government has not commented on the Nigerien government’s criticism of the conditions of deportation of irregular migrants from Algeria, so far.
