The “Wazen-Dhehiba” border crossing, the main link between Libya and Tunisia, was reopened today, Sunday, after it was temporarily closed on the Tunisian side yesterday, Saturday, due to local protests.
The delegation in Wazen Dhiba confirmed that the crossing is now operating around the clock, and that transit traffic between the two countries has regained its normal pace, with waiting times on the Tunisian side reduced to less than an hour.
The protests arose in response to what the protesters described as ill-treatment by the Libyan authorities towards Tunisian travelers and the harassment to which some have been subjected in the past few days.
The protesters demanded improved conditions and reciprocal treatment for travelers on the Tunisian side of the crossing, and the regional commissioner in Dhiba, Rashid Al-Haddad, indicated that matters had been settled and that movement had returned to normal thanks to the understandings between the concerned parties.
It is noteworthy that the Wazen Dhiba crossing is currently the only open crossing between the two countries after the Ras Jadir crossing was closed from the Libyan side several weeks ago, making it a vital point for movement between Libya and Tunisia.
