Russia has criticized the RSF, demanding that it consider Sudan’s national interests rather than its own aspirations.

Russia’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Anna Evsteneva, said in a speech to a Security Council session on the humanitarian situation in Sudan: “The Sudanese authorities have shown their readiness to work towards a positive solution to the problems, which we believe can be the starting point for a comprehensive settlement of the conflict.”

“To this end, the other side must commit to the settlement process and put Sudan’s national interests above any personal considerations,” Evstenieva said, in an apparent reference to the RSF.

Evstinyeva stressed that Sudan needs to find solutions acceptable to all to get out of the current acute phase of the conflict, and referred to the Jeddah Process agreements, especially the Declaration of Commitment to the Protection of Sudanese Civilians on May 11, 2023, as it can contribute to these efforts.

Evstenieva explained that the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General for Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra, can play a crucial role in consolidating and mainstreaming mediation efforts, within the framework of his current mandate.

Evstinyeva stressed that the solution ultimately remains in the hands of the Sudanese themselves and they are able to achieve peace and preserve the unity and stability of the country.
