The military escalation between Sudan’s warring parties has intensified ahead of a new round of talks hosted by Saudi Arabia for Sudan’s conflicting parties.
At a time when warplanes of the army launched air raids on positions of the Rapid Support Forces in the Darfur region, west of the country, sources in the “support” talked about the progress of the “Harir Kordofan region”, in the south of the country, from the grip of the army.
Heavy fighting has been ongoing in the Darfur and Kordofan regions for several days, exacerbating humanitarian suffering and increasing displacement.
Army warplanes bombed rapid support sites in the cities of El Fasher (the capital of North Darfur state) and Nyala (South Darfur), while witnesses reported that the city’s markets “witnessed a significant rise in prices, in addition to the rise in fuel prices.”
The Sudanese Civil Democratic Forces Coordination (Taqaddum) said in a brief statement on Friday that the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) had committed to returning to negotiations in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, within the next two weeks “without preconditions.”
The coordination also clarified that the two sides will return to negotiations “with a stronger will and a sincere and firm determination to stop the war,” and there was no immediate comment from the army or the RSF on the “progress” statement.
Jeddah hosted negotiations between the two parties in May last year, a few weeks after the outbreak of war between them, and the negotiations did not succeed in stopping the fighting.
