Nigeria has seen more than 100 prisoners escape after a prison near the capital Abuja partially collapsed as a result of hours of torrential rain.

A prison official reported that the rains caused the destruction of the fence surrounding the prison in Suleja Town, enabling 118 inmates to escape.

The spokesperson for the prison authority, Adamu Doza, confirmed that the authorities have so far recaptured ten of the escapees, while efforts are ongoing to track down the rest.

There are concerns that the escapees might head into the dense forests surrounding the area, which are known to be a haven for criminal gangs.

The country has seen thousands of prisoners escape in similar incidents, including the escape of some 900 prisoners in Abuja last year.

Prisons in Nigeria are overcrowded and decrepit, with 70% of inmates awaiting trial, and most facilities dating back to the colonial era with rare renovations.
