Stephanie Khoury, the new US envoy, arrived in Libya amid questions about Washington’s intentions in the country, amid tensions and divisions between political parties.
Ali al-Sol, a member of the Libyan House of Representatives, said that the real goal behind the US intervention is to thwart the electoral process in Libya.
Al-Sol explained that the basis of the Libyan conflict is due to the country’s geographical location and economic importance, which makes it a target for the intervention of Western powers led by Washington, adding that the US administration controls the scene through non-national forces, whose goal is to keep the situation as it is and prevent any progress towards holding elections.
For his part, Idris Ahmid, a political analyst, said that Khoury came to Libya to serve US interests, taking advantage of the ongoing internal and international divisions and disagreements, noting that her appointment was not surprising in the absence of a Libyan will to achieve stability and hold elections.
Hamid added that the United Nations is greatly influenced by major countries, especially the United States, and the UN secretary-general and the UN envoy work within the framework determined by the major powers, unless the envoy is prepared to act against US interests.
Hamid gave the example of the situation in Syria when a Sudanese fact-finding envoy was appointed, but he did not conform to US interests and was directly excluded, raising doubts about the independence of the UN envoys.
