The Libyan government issued a statement calling for the release of Hannibal Gaddafi from Lebanese prisons, where he has been holding for more than eight years.
The Libyan authorities stress that the charges against Hannibal Gaddafi have not been proven and there is insufficient evidence linking him to the alleged crime.
The Libyan demand came against the backdrop of the spread of photos showing Gaddafi in an underground cell in dire conditions, which raised the Libyan authorities’ concern about the conditions of his detention and treatment.
In its statement, the Libyan Ministry of Justice condemned the violations of Gaddafi’s basic rights, referring to the rights guaranteed under international treaties, and called on Lebanon to improve detention conditions and guarantee the legal rights of the detainee.
The ministry expressed its aspiration for the Lebanese authorities to respond to these demands, stressing that it will continue to follow up on the issue through international and regional political and human rights channels to ensure that Gaddafi obtains his rights and freedom.
Lebanese judicial authorities accuse Hannibal Gaddafi of concealing information about the fate of Imam Musa al-Sadr and his two companions, who disappeared in Libya in 1978. Gaddafi denies knowing of any details related to the case.
