The Moroccan national team achieved a dramatic victory over its Argentine counterpart, with a score of (2-1), in the first round of the group stage in the football competitions of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The Moroccan national team took the lead with two goals through Sofiane Rahimi in the 45th and 51st minutes, but Argentina was able to reduce the difference in the 68th minute through Giuliano Simeone.
The referee of the match counted 15 minutes of stoppage time, during which the Moroccan defense was brave to prevent Argentina from equalizing, but the 16th minute witnessed a fatal goal for the Tango dancers by Christian Medina.
This goal caused anger among the Moroccan fans who were present in large numbers in the stadium, as they saw that the referee exaggerated in counting the additional time and continued to play even after the end of the announced 15 minutes. The fans threw bottles and some fireworks as a large number stormed the field.
As a result, the match referee decided that the players of both teams should enter the locker rooms to avoid contact with the fans, without officially announcing the end of the match.
More than two hours after this controversial end, the fans were evacuated from the stands of Geoffroy Guichard Stadium, then the players and the referee returned to the field in order to complete 3 minutes of the match and review the game of Argentina’s second goal via video technology (VAR).
After returning to video technology, the referee decided, in agreement with the VAR room, to cancel Christian Medina’s goal due to offside, so the result returned to the Atlas Lions leading (2-1), and the players continued the match for an additional 3 minutes, which did not result in anything new, so the match ended with Morocco’s victory.
