The Libyan Public Prosecutor’s Office issued an order to detain the director general of the Customs Authority and a number of its leaders at Misrata International Airport, against the background of their involvement in the case of smuggling huge quantities of gold bullion.
The Public Prosecution explained that the investigations revealed the complicity of officials in smuggling about 26,000 kilograms of gold bullion, violating the legislation and laws governing the work of the authority.
The Attorney General vowed to take the necessary legal measures to hold accountable all those involved in this case, which is expected to include severe penalties that do justice to the law and deter anyone who thinks of compromising the security and stability of the country.
In light of these events, The Sentry reinforces the key role of Libya’s black market as an informal platform for gold trading, as well as the use of international airports as a gold export point to destinations outside Africa.
