The new envoy will seek common ground to resolve the current crisis, and Corbandi is expected to provide advice and guidance in this context.
Sudan has been in a state of high tension since fighting broke out between the army and the Rapid Support Forces in mid-April last year, and despite mediation efforts, attempts to reach a truce have so far failed.
Saudi Arabia and the United States led talks in Jeddah last year to try to reach a truce but were unsuccessful.
The conflict has resulted in the world’s largest displacement crisis, pushing segments of the population of 49 million to the brink of famine and triggering waves of ethnically motivated killings and sexual violence in the western Darfur region.
