Egyptian security forces have taken control of the situation in the village of al-Fawakher in the city of Samalut in the southern governorate of Minya, restoring calm after rumored violence.
Copts in the village were attacked by a group of people over a rumor about building a new church, and some Copts’ homes were torched, beaten, and tried to be evicted from their homes.
Bishop Makarios of Minya posted on his page on the “X” website at the beginning of the events: “The Copts in the village of Al-Fawakher in Minya are under attack by extremists, as many houses were burned, and the people were prevented from leaving.”
“We have informed the concerned authorities of the expected attacks, promised to take the necessary steps, and we trust the speed of their action,” he said.
Quickly, security forces deployed in the village, and were able to control the situation and arrest a large number of instigators and perpetrators, and imposed a security cordon around the village and its entrances and exits.
After that, Bishop Makarios confirmed in a new tweet that calm prevails in the village now, and that the security forces have controlled the situation and arrested those responsible for the attacks, noting that the state will compensate those affected and hold the perpetrators accountable.
