The Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Hani Sweilam, announced attempts by Ethiopia to manipulate the drafting of a document on the Renaissance Dam, stressing Egypt’s rejection of this step-in form and content and considering it unacceptable.
Swailem explained that Ethiopia tried to secure the freedom to launch future projects on the Blue Nile River in the Renaissance Dam agreement, considering this unacceptable, adding that Egypt’s negotiations were not aimed at future projects, but rather focused on “filling and operating the Ethiopian dam only.”
Al-Shorouk newspaper quoted Sweilam as saying that Egypt rejected this matter in form and substance and stressed that Ethiopia tried to reduce its commitments and amend the figures agreed upon in the recent drafts.
Sweilam warned that the collapse of the Renaissance Dam will affect 150 million citizens in Egypt and Sudan, stressing that Egypt is working to preserve its water rights and security.
“Legally, Ethiopia has tried to put in place elastic formulations that do not abide by international law for transboundary rivers, making agreement the same as non-agreement, and resorting to a competent dispute resolution body is not binding,” he said.
At the end of his remarks, the Egyptian Minister of Water Resources announced that Egypt will closely monitor the process of filling and operating the Renaissance Dam and will reserve its right to defend its water and national security.
It should be noted that the fourth and final meeting of the GERD negotiations process did not yield any result, with the continuation of Ethiopian positions rejecting technical and legal solutions that would secure the interests of the three countries (Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan).
