Libyan football club Al-Sawaed announced the death of 22-year-old Youssef Al-Hamali, who also played for the Libyan Olympic team.
The club said in a press release that Al-Hamali’s death came after he swallowed his tongue while sleeping, which led to a decrease in the level of oxygen in his brain.
He was immediately transferred to the intensive care unit where he spent time in critical condition, before dying in hospital.
The Libyan club announced the suspension of all sports activities for three days to mourn the death of Youssef Al-Hamali.
