Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Zhang Xiaogang has criticized NATO, describing it as a “source of discord” that has sparked wars in several countries.

In a press briefing, Zhang said: “NATO is a machine that sows the chaos of war. This machine has brought the fires of war and disaster to the countries and peoples of Ukraine, Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya.”

He explained that NATO continues to extend its influence to the Asia-Pacific region, noting that the alliance is attacking China and encouraging some countries in the region to follow its approach.

The Chinese spokesman expressed his country’s strong dissatisfaction with the final statement of the recent NATO summit, which he described as “full of lies, bias, incitement and slander,” adding: “We express our strong dissatisfaction and protest against the statement.”

In the closing statement of the NATO summit in Washington, held on July 10, the alliance announced plans to hold a meeting with representatives of Australia, New Zealand, South Korea and Japan to discuss potential areas of cooperation, as well as common security challenges. The statement also claimed that China is creating “systemic problems for the security of the alliance.” For its part, the Chinese embassy in Washington expressed its objection to the description of the People’s Republic of China in the NATO statement as a “threat,” and called on the alliance to stop making groundless accusations.
