The Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, received the UN envoy and head of the mission for political affairs, Abdullah Bathili, on his last visit before handing over his post to US Deputy Stephanie Khoury.
During the meeting, Haftar and Batelli discussed political developments in the country and the need to support the political process to achieve stability and peace.
In a related context, Bathili visited Tripoli, where he met with the outgoing head of the “Government of National Unity”, Abdelhamid Dbeibeh, and discussed the role of the United Nations mission in supporting the political process in Libya and achieving the aspirations of the Libyan people in the presidential and parliamentary elections.
He also met with the head of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed al-Menfi.
Batelli’s resignation followed a series of withdrawals by UN envoys in Libya over the past thirteen years.
The appointment of Khoury, who played a role in Dbeibeh’s accession to the presidency of the Government of National Unity, raises the concerns of the Libyan parties that this appointment is linked to the United States’ attempt to expand again in Libya after years of its retreat.
