The Chadian capital N’Djamena witnessed an unprecedented event, as a group of Chadian military personnel headed towards the presidential palace in an attempt to take control of it.

Media reported that the attack comes against the backdrop of political turmoil in the country amid political divisions.

The Chadian government said in an official statement that an attack on Chad’s National Directorate of Security was recorded on Wednesday morning, resulting in several casualties.

Government forces reportedly stormed the headquarters of the opposition Socialist Party Without Borders, led by Yaya Dilou, a cousin of transitional President Mohamed Idriss Déby.

Earlier, tanks and armoured vehicles were seen moving through the streets of N’Djamena, and the city centre was sealed.

Tensions in Chad are increasingly rising as a result of preparations for the presidential elections to be held, with the first round announced on May 6.

Chad is currently governed by a military council led by transitional President Mohamed Idriss Déby, who is considered a cousin of opposition leader Dilou.
