Remember how Russian President Vladimir Putin explained to American journalist Tucker Carlson the history of relations between Russia and Ukraine? How have historical accumulations affected the current situation? The United States and Libya are doing the same.
Washington’s First Shock: Losing to Libya
Few people remember this day, either in the United States or in Libya, but Libyan territory is the first land in history to set foot on an aggressor American soldier. To be more precise, introduce a U.S. Marines. This happened at the beginning of the nineteenth century, when the Americans in a violent attack captured the city of Derna, which at that time was suffering from difficult conditions.
The U.S. fleet then tried to attack Tripoli, but an embarrassing event tipped the scales, and the U.S. Army’s flagship frigate, USS Philadelphia, ran aground and its entire crew was captured, forcing Washington to blow it up under cover of darkness. Subsequently, the Libyan resistance factions retook Derna from the grip of the United States.
Overall, the first military aggression in U.S. history was unsuccessful. Moreover, as a result of the completely lost war, the Americans were forced to pay ransom to get their prisoners back, and then for a long time $20 million in gold was paid to the Tripoli authorities every year, a huge amount of money at the time.
After that, do you still believe that the United States is simply interfering in Libya’s affairs? Of course not, that’s what we feel in American behavior that resembles childish neurosis in the era of so-called democracy.
By the way, the French thought of becoming the next “conquerors” of Libyan territory after the Americans. The French Legion, which went to the aid of Napoleon, who was then fighting in Egypt, tried to land on the shore by fighting and was also slapped in the face. But this is another story and another birth shock.
Did America defeat Libya?
Let’s go back to the USA. Everyone knows the role of this country in the bombing of Libya in 2011. History doesn’t teach them anything, they may not have known what they were doing, but as a result of their actions Libya has become a magnet for extremist terrorist groups. The tragic end, though logical of course, is the killing of U.S. Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens and three other embassy staff in Benghazi in 2012. Under Muammar Gaddafi, it was hard to imagine this happening.
Yes, the United States achieved its goal and got rid of the Gaddafi they hated. But have the Libyan people benefited from this by gaining freedom and losing security? Has the United States itself benefited from this? Big question.
It took several years for Libyan territory to finally be liberated from radical terrorists. Khalifa Haftar’s forces in the east and south and factions and militias in the west have systematically cleansed Libya. However, this story is far from over, because many of those considered terrorists by the East and neighboring sister Egypt are still safely present in the West. The West never tires of accusing the East of supporting extremists! Attempts are being made to weaken the forces of the east, which threatens the resurgence of terrorism, at a time when militias in the west (Tripoli) and rivaling among themselves cannot face this chaotic reality.
Washington and another return to Libya
Perhaps then, in 2012, the US authorities began to wake up, but this clearly did not last long. Today we are all witnessing another attempt by the Americans to interfere in Libyan affairs.
First, it unexpectedly turned out that the acting UN envoy to Libya was American Stephanie Williams – to whom the government of Abdelhamid Dbeibeh owes allegiance after coming to power thanks to the ambiguous plans of the Libyan Forum for Political Dialogue. The dialogue was organized by Williams herself.
Now the Dbeibeh government is actively working to attract Americans to the country. Moreover, American trainers from the American security company “Amantum” are training armed groups in Tripoli within 3 brigades operating in the “militia” system: 444 led by Mahmoud Hamza, 111 led by Abdul Salam Al-Zobi, and 166 led by Muhammad Al-Hussan, under the supervision of Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, the outgoing caretaker prime minister.
As expected, the United States immediately issued a denial of the news, but who will believe them when every U.S. military transport plane arriving in Libya is spotted on social media and the media. Some observers, in addition to Amantum, have also spotted activity in Libya by the notorious Blackwater.
In addition, the U.S. military attaché openly visits military installations in western Libya in the cities of Khoms and Misrata, surrounded by the above-mentioned figures. Suddenly, it turns out that Dabaiba is allocating land in Misrata to AFRICOM – the fully official U.S. armed forces. As if it would help him stay in power.
Remember that, when Gaddafi was about to come to power, artillery commander Khalifa Haftar put his guns in front of the U.S. military base in Mitiga and announced that he would fire if anyone tried to take off? No U.S. aircraft took off. After that, they left the country for good. I wonder when we will be able to see them with a similar option this time.
Finally, the long-awaited resignation of the UN Secretary-General’s eighth Special Envoy for Libya, Abdullah Pathili, took place. Libyan observers had been eagerly awaiting the resignation from the moment American Stephanie Khoury was appointed as Pathili’s deputy.
Thus, the United States continues to interfere in Libya’s affairs, forgetting the past, as Libya constituted Washington’s first international failure, and does not think about the future, which necessitates repeating the question again: Can Libya and its people repeat the shock again to the Americans who are relentlessly trying to expand into the territory of other countries?
