Algerian boxer Imane Khelif won a historic gold medal in her final fight at the 2024 Paris Olympics, after defeating Chinese Liu Yuang by unanimous decision at Roland Garros.
Khelif defeated second-ranked Chinese Liu Yang 5-0 by unanimous decision, becoming the first Algerian and African boxer to win a gold medal at the Olympic Games.
The International Olympic Committee allowed Khelif to participate, after she was excluded following the semi-finals of the World Championships last year in New Delhi, by the International Boxing Federation, which was suspended from the Olympics due to issues of governance, corruption and match-fixing, for not passing the gender eligibility tests.
The 25-year-old said, “For eight years, this was my dream, and today I am an Olympic champion.”
She continued, “I am a strong woman, with a special strength. I always sent a message from the ring to those who stood against me… I promised the President of the Republic to achieve the medal when he received me in 2022, and I kept my promise. I call it a medal of honor for the entire Arab world and Muslims.”
Joy spread on Friday evening as Algerian boxer Imane Khelif won the Paris Olympics -66kg final, bravely defying the huge controversy over her sexual identity.
As soon as they left the Roland Garros stands and entered the outdoor area, the place was filled with a festive atmosphere, as Imane Khelif’s fans gathered to dance and sing to the tunes of Algerian music.
