Algerian authorities announced the arrest of 833 smugglers and illegal immigrants in just one week.
A statement by the Algerian Ministry of Defense said that 293 smugglers were arrested and confiscated 24 vehicles, 96 generators and 50 pressure hammers, in addition to a metal detector, explosives and 524 tons of food intended for smuggling.
The statement explained that the explosive equipment found in the possession of the detainees is used in illegal gold prospecting.
Maritime border guard units also arrested 540 illegal immigrants of various nationalities.
