Trade unions at Charles de Gaulle and Orly airports in the French capital, Paris, announced plans to go on strike on July 17, nine days before the start of the Olympic Games.

The strike comes in the context of unions demanding increased wages and improved working conditions, in addition to bonuses and additional resources for all workers during the Olympic period.

Airports are expected to witness a significant increase in passenger traffic, with the number of arrivals expected to reach approximately 350,000 people daily, including athletes and their sports equipment.

Unions indicated that this increase in movement requires an increase in employment and improvement of operational conditions.

For their part, the unions of ADP, the state company that runs the main airports in Paris, are demanding a plan to hire an additional thousand employees and ensure that they can take vacations during the busy period of the Olympic Games, which extend from July 26 to August 11, followed by the Paralympics from August 28 to September 8. .

Trade unions also criticized what they described as unilateral decisions by management regarding the distribution of bonuses, declaring their rejection of management policies that approved bonuses for some employees only, and not others.

Chief organizer Tony Estanget urged the unions to hold a “truce” during the competitions to ensure that international guests are received in the best possible conditions.

It is noteworthy that unions in France have a long history of strikes that coincided with major events such as the FIFA World Cup in 1998, which puts pressure on administrations to respond to workers’ demands to avoid disruptions that distort the country’s image during major global events.
