About 40 people have been killed in violence in the disputed Abyei region on South Sudan’s border with Sudan.

The clashes led to massive displacement towards the UNISFA compound in Abyei.

There are occasional clashes in the Abyei area between ethnic Dinka tribes, over a dispute over the location of an administrative border, where large tax revenues are collected from cross-border trade.

Abyei is known to be rich in oil, and South Sudan and Sudan jointly administer it, each claiming its right over it.
