A gold jeep watch that once belonged to one of the richest passengers of the sunken “Titanic” has been sold for a record £1.175 million (about $1.46 million).

The price of the watch owned by John Jacob Aserto exceeded all estimates ranging from £100,000 to £150,000 and broke the previous record for any Titanic ever sold.

The sale was organized by British auction house “Henry Aldridge & Sain”t and reported that an American buyer bought the watch that was recovered with the body of “Asarto” after the shipwreck in the early hours of April 15, 1912.

The watch, made of 14-carat gold and bearing the initials “Asertu”, was found with his body on April 22, 1912, and was used by his son after its restoration.

Aserto was considered one of the richest people in the world at the time, and he stayed on board until it sank after rescuing his new wife, Madeleine.
