The military, security, and social forces in the western city of Zintan announced their support for the candidacy of the son of former Libyan President Saif al-Islam Gaddafi for the presidential elections.
“Saif al-Islam enjoys great popular support and support, leadership qualifications, sincere national commitment and extensive political experience,” the statement from these forces said.
The statement continued: “We will not allow all suspicious attempts by some local and international parties to prevent him from his right as a Libyan citizen to run for elections and advance ranks to serve his country.”
The statement added: “We highly appreciate the positions and contacts received successively, which expressed the unity of position with the Libyan tribes and cities that share the national concern.”
“A number of national measures will be announced later at various levels that would unite the national ranks,” the statement said.
The Supreme Council of Fezzan Tribes and Cities welcomed “the sincere national positions contained in the statement of the people of Zintan,” stressing that “these courageous positions express keenness on the unity of the homeland and its civil peace.”
However, there are mixed reactions with some expressing concern about rising tensions and divisions in the country, while others see this support as an opportunity to realign political and military forces and alliances.
