Explosives experts in Greece have successfully neutralized 314 bombs left over from World War II found in a room under the floor of the old Athens airport, closed since 2001.
According to reports by the Greek newspaper “Kathimerini”, the bombs were found buried at a depth of two meters, dating back to the period of the German occupation of Greece between 1941 and 1944.
The mayor of the region, Giannis Konstantinos, expressed gratitude for the coincidence that prevented a disaster, noting that the area was inhabited and had schools and nurseries above the storage area, and was later used as sports facilities during the 2014 Olympic Games.
Konstantinos added that the (Luftwaffe) stored the bombs at the airport on the Athenian coast and were left there when German forces quickly withdrew from southeastern Europe in the face of the Red Army’s advance.
A mega construction project is now being developed on the 620-hectare airport site, where luxury hotels and residential complexes are being built.
Work was temporarily suspended due to fears of more undetected bombs underground.
The remnants of World War II in Greece have multiple effects that continue to this day, and Greece still deals with remnants of war such as unexploded bombs that are detected and defused periodically.
