The Social, military and security forces in the western Libyan city of Zintan announced during a solemn military parade their support for Saif al-Islam Gaddafi’s candidacy for the presidential elections.
“Saif al-Islam enjoys great popular support and support, leadership qualifications, a sincere national commitment and extensive political experience,” she said.
“We will not allow all suspicious attempts by some local and international parties to prevent him from his right as a Libyan citizen to run for elections and advance ranks to serve his country,” she said.
The Supreme Council of Fezzan Tribes and Cities welcomed “the sincere national positions contained in the statement of the people of Zintan”. He stressed that “these courageous stances express keenness on the unity of the homeland and its civil peace.”
In response to the statement, local media and activists circulated a letter signed by Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, in which he quoted a Quranic verse.
Following the Zintan statement, he wrote, using verse 63 of Surat al-Anfal in the Qur’an: “If you spend what is on earth, all of them will not be drawn between their hearts, but Allah is a thousand.”
Analysts point out that the shift in the position of the tribes of the city of Zintan, which previously rejected Saif al-Islam Gaddafi’s candidacy in the presidential elections, would give Gaddafi’s son military power on the ground to support him, in addition to the popular power he enjoys, especially among tribes supporting the late father’s regime.
