The head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warned Saturday that half of Sudan’s population is in dire need of humanitarian aid.
The UN official said on his X account that the health needs required by Sudan are very large, with about 3.4 million children suffering from malnutrition.
Ghebreyesus noted that Sudan’s growing needs “are not receiving sufficient international attention,” as millions of people, especially in Darfur state, are deprived of direct humanitarian assistance.
The Director of Global Health appealed to all parties to provide safe access for international assistance and agencies to all conflict-affected areas, so that WHO and its partners can protect all groups.
According to UN figures, 14,000 Sudanese citizens died during the war, nearly 8 million were displaced, and the latest World Food Program report showed that 19 million Sudanese children are unable to attend school due to the civil war.
25 million people, almost half the population, need assistance, and nearly 18 million Sudanese are severely food insecure, of whom 5 million face hunger.
The war in Sudan began in mid-April 2023, where the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support are fighting a war that is still ongoing under the number of the Security Council resolution to stop fighting.
