The World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that the war in Sudan could leave “the world’s biggest hunger crisis” in a country already experiencing the largest displacement crisis internationally.

WFP Director Cindy McCain said: “The fighting, which has killed thousands and displaced 8 million people, threatens the lives of millions and threatens peace and stability in the entire region.”

McCain stressed that unless the violence stops, “the war in Sudan could leave the world’s largest hunger crisis,” with the World Food Programme (WFP) stating, “less than 5 percent of Sudanese currently able to provide themselves with a full meal.”

In South Sudan, where 600,000 people have fled the war, “one in five children in border shelters is malnourished,” McCain said.

18 million Sudanese are severely food insecure, with 5 million on the brink of famine, while the humanitarian workers assisting them suffer from mobility difficulties and significant funding shortfalls.
