Iran and several Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Lebanon, and Yemen, announced Wednesday, April 10, the first day of Eid al-Fitr.

A statement by the office of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei clarified that the crescent of Shawwal can be seen on Tuesday evening, and also stated that the leader will lead Eid prayers.

In his speech, the Supreme Leader is expected to address several important issues, including the situation in Gaza and the attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, in addition to other regional and international topics.

On the other hand, the Saudi Supreme Court decided that Wednesday is the first day of Eid, declaring that Tuesday is the completion of the month of Ramadan, which will complete 30 days this year, after the crescent could not be seen.

The vice president of the Saudi Weather and Climate Society, Dr. Abdullah Al-Misnad, also confirmed that the lunar month will be 30 days according to calculations for Mecca.

He pointed to special circumstances related to the sighting of this year’s Shawwal crescent, which coincides with a solar eclipse visible only in North and Central America and parts of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

He explained that the moon sets before the sun on Monday means that there is no crescent seen on that day, stressing that the month of Ramadan will complete 30 days and that Eid will be celebrated on Wednesday.
